Planet-score is governed by 80% scientists and 20% NGOs.

To guarantee the independence, expertise and integrity of the Planet-score label over time, the brand is owned by the Solid Grounds endowment fund. It grants a licence to the mission-led company Planet-score SAS, which is responsible for its deployment on food products.

The Fund’s complete independence from any company, industry sector or trade association ensures that the use of the Planet-score brand is carried out strictly in the service of the public interest and consumer transparency.

Born from the momentum of civil society

Planet-score was born in 2021 in response to growing concerns around food systems, misleading green claims and sustainability labelling. This broad civil-society movement brought together scientists from diverse fields, consumer organisations, environmental NGOs, groups of students and producers.

Planet-score labelling is one of the four pillars of Solid Grounds Institute's mission. Its purpose is to rebuild trust across the entire agri-food value chain, from upstream production to downstream distribution. Consumer studies in France and across Europe consistently show that such trust is only possible when there is full independence from economic actors and public authorities.

The Fund’s work receives no public subsidies, and donations confer no rights over its activities.

A cross-disciplinary governance

Planet-score belongs to Solid Grounds Institute, a general interest foundation governed by independent, multidisciplinary scientists and experts (agronomy, biodiversity, climate, sociology, geography, medical practitioners). No company, brands, or union sits on its governance. The foundation sets the framework and mission to conduct and support research to accelerate the ecological and social transition.

Founded by Sabine Bonnot

Sabine Bonnot has dedicated her career to driving the ecological transition in agricultural and food practices. After an initial experience in the agri-food and agrochemical industries at an international level, she committed herself more than fifteen years ago to working directly in the field, both through hands-on agricultural production and as the leader of pioneering organisations.

She served as board member and later president of a French research institute under the Ministry of Agriculture, whose mission is to accelerate this transition.
